Hello,

I paid 2300 many years ago for double glazing. At that time I was paying the mortgage single-handedly because my wife was looking after young kids and working few hours.

About 15 years later we are both working but I do more hours than her though we split the mortgage 50/50. When the home is sold can i claim some of the money I put into improving the property?

thanks

Steve

Simple answer = no!! Contributions are counted as equal. The priority when sorting out finances on divorce is meeting needs for housing and income now and in the future. Ensuring any dependent children have a secure and stable home is top of the list.

OK, what about me using my savings to feed the family when my income dropped and my wife couldn't support because she was in school? I now have a lot of debt because I could not make any savings when she was saving

Debts that may be seen as joint are considered and any savings in either party's name are also part of the matrimonial pot for division.

The first thing is to get full financial disclosure.

If you know the figures we can advise on possible settlement.

We need to know

Ages
Incomes
Length of the marriage plus cohabitation
Children ages and proposed arrangements
Market value of former matrimonial home (FMH)
Outstanding mortgage
Size of fmh
Pensions CEV and type
Other assets in sole or joint names
Loans/debts in sole or joint names
Any other factor ie disability, inheritance etc that may have an impact on settlement.
