Direct Access Barristers tend to charge more for their time than if they''d been instructed by a solicitor. This is because they aren''t prepped by a legal bod but by a lay person.

As long as you know your stuff, know what you want out of your hearing and are have all the relevant paperwork prepared there''s no reason not to go direct. I would certainly consider it.

Most Chambers have lists of barristers that are available on a direct access basis and if you can cut out solicitor fees all the better.

Okay thanks Toystory. You said in one of your posts you have to go back to court for a hearing, will you try and use a direct access barrister then? Or if it has been, how did it go?!!

So just a little update for anyone considering this...do your research and do your best to ensure you will be happy with whom you choose. Maybe go on referral if possible.

Whilst they may cut out legal costs, Toystory is right, they do charge more upfront. Most started at £300 plus VAT to read the papers...so you do not want to be going to many more than one..

Hi All - just to let you know that my friends case is finished now, they used a direct access barrister and it worked out well for them. A few teething issues with the brief upfront but it was helpful in the result so perhaps that is a good way to go for some of you. Overall cost was roughly 3500GBP instead of potentially ten plus through solicitors.
