Living in France

have lived apart from my wife for over 5 years and have lived in France for those 5 years.
Does anyone know if it legally possible for me to start divorce proceedings here in France even though the original marriage was in the UK and my wife has always and still does, live there?

At least you are in the correct time zone for this site's clock.

As long as you meet the French residency requirements you may apply there. You should be aware though that the country where divorce proceedings are first commenced will have jurisdiction so if you wife has petitioned in the UK the divorce will go ahead here.

I live in France and I've just started divorce proceedings here. There is no reason why you can't but there is also no reason why you can't do it in the UK even though you don't live there.

I chose to do it from here as there is a question of custody. If the rulings are made here where I live with the children, any residency orders are more easily enforced.

I'm not too clear about any advantages or dissadvantages, it seems to me that things are pretty much the same.

I've only just sent in the divorce petition so I'm not greatly experienced yet:blink:
