Sorting Out Joint Bank Accounts

If you have a joint bank account or savings account, any money in it belongs to you both and usually either one of you can make withdrawals without the permission of the other person. You will need to deal with joint bank accounts as part of any financial agreement. Make sure that any joint accounts have been closed or transferred into the name of one of you.

Be aware that whoever you hold an account with in joint names could withdraw money from that account and even run up an overdraft that you would be responsible for paying off. Talk to them and see whether you can agree to putting an instruction in place so that your joint signatures or authorisation are required for any future withdrawals. If you think that there is a risk that they will withdraw money without your agreement, you may want to contact the bank urgently.

Once any joint financial agreements have been separated you should write to the credit reference agencies to make sure they sever any links with your ex-spouse or civil partner.
