As a result of our personal experience we have made it our mission to help others get through their divorce. Our aim is to help you keep costs to a minimum and to avoid unnecessary stress and damage to your relationships.
Our Top Tip: Reach an Amicable Agreement
![]() | If at all possible we recommend that you try and agree an amicable financial settlement. If you and your ex can come to an agreement on finances then you can use our simple consent order service to keep your legal costs to an absolute minimum. |
Unfortunately it is not always possible to reach a quick, amicable agreement. There is often a level of anger and/or mistrust between the husband and wife and also a considerable difference of opinion as to what is a fair financial settlement.
Most people in this situation go and see a high street solicitor.
Using a traditional high street solicitor to fight for a fair financial settlement can cost tens of thousands of pounds and take a year to 18 months.
Wikivorce have worked in partnership with two progressive family law firms to develop a greatly improved legal service.

High street solicitors charge hourly rates of around £200 to £250. They charge for every phone call and letter. Bills can escalate very quickly without any clear progress being made. Many members of Wikivorce have spent thousands of pounds on solicitor's fees to do the basic paperwork, and then run out of money after a few months - leaving them having to attend court without any support from their solicitor. | The new service that we have designed in partnership with Bretherton's and the National Family Law Practice has simple, transparent, fixed fees. The price of each step is clearly stated in advance. Use the menu to the left for full details of the costs of each step (Step 1 to Step 4).

The longer they take - the more you pay. |
| |
The biggest issue with the cost of a traditional high street solicitor is that the longer they can drag out the case, the more they can earn in fees. They are paid by the hour and have little financial incentive to settle your case early. | Our aim is to help you reach agreement as early as you can for the minimum cost. We will maintain communications and be keen to negotiate with your ex's solicitor at every stage of the process. The fixed price service includes the drafting and submission of a consent order just as soon as you and your ex come to an agreement. Traditional lawyers are very reluctant to publish the detailed costs of divorce finances. In contrast, we have chosen to show you the full costs up front to help you make an informed decision about the cost savings you can achieve if you are able to reach an early settlement.

Most people have little or no knowledge of the legal process for deciding financial settlements on divorce. Solicitors tend to focus on the process and do not have the time to explain everything to you. People getting divorced typically have dozens of unanswered questions about how things work, and have very little understanding of what work their solicitor is doing and what the next steps are. | We believe that it is important that you understand the whole process and that you know what work you are paying for. We have documented the full process and itemised and costed all of the work involved in each of the 4 key steps. For more detail of what work we will do and what it will cost feel free to explore Steps 1 to 4 using the menu on the left.
