If you have a low income and only modest assets then you may qualify for free mediation through the Legal Aid scheme. The scheme can cover all the costs for the person on low income and also some of the costs for the other party (spouse/partner).

Is the mediation service available near me ?
The Wikivorce mediation service is available locally at hundreds of locations throughout England and Wales.
We cover all citys and counties throughout the country, so wherever you live, we can provide a mediation service in a local town close to you, within 10 miles or 30 minutes drive.
We also cover every borough in London.
If you live outside the UK it may be possible to arrange mediation over Skype or telephone conference call.
What is the process for arranging your mediation through Wikivorce?
Wikivorce have been providing divorce services and financial agreements for many years. Now we have made it easy to arrange your mediation through Wikivorce as well:
1) Call our helpline to discuss your situation:
Although we have tried to provide comprehensive information about mediation on the website, we do suggest that you speak to one of our advisors on 01202 805020 before you order the mediation service. We would like to make sure that you have a good understanding of the service and how it fits in with the wider divorce and separation process before you proceed, and also to confirm that your case is suitable for mediation.
2) Place your Order:
You can order through our secure website by pressing the 'Order Now' button below, or you can call our free helpline on 01202 805020 and speak to an expert advisor who can answer your questions and take a telephone order.
3) Questionnaire:
We will email a link to a short online questionnaire for you to complete.
The questionnaire asks for the following information:
a) the name and address of both parties
b) the nature of the issues that you wish to discuss (typically finances and/or children)
c) the status of your case (what stage of the divorce/separation process you have reached).
4) First appointment scheduled:
Our local mediation service will contact you to arrange an appointment date and time.
5) Meet local mediation for MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting):
You will meet up with a local mediator at their office. They will tell you how mediation works and describe what happens in a typical joint mediation session. The rules of mediation (such as their impartiality, confidentiality etc) will be covered. They will discuss some of the background to your case and will want to understand your objectives and expectations of the mediation process.
6) Invite your (ex) spouse or partner to mediation:
The mediator will try to contact the other party by phone/email/letter to inform them that you wish to use mediation and invite them to attend a similar introductory MIAM session.
7) If the other party agrees to attend mediation:
Your (ex) spouse or partner will meet with the same mediator for their own individual MIAM session. If after that they agree to proceed then a date will be set for a first joint session of mediation, and in the meantime you will both be given some forms to complete ahead of the joint session (in the case of a financial mediation this will entail both parties disclosing their financial situation to the other party, e.g. salary, savings, debts, pensions etc).
8) If mediation doesn't go ahead:
Mediation cannot proceed unless both parties agree to mediate. Also sometimes mediation may be deemed unsuitable (for example due to domestic violence issues). If mediation does not proceed then you can ask the mediator for an FM1 certificate which allows you to take the case to court.
