Righto Wikiland, not very often I ask for advice, but I need some now, especially from the greenfingered amongst you;)

As part of my reclaiming my home and turning it into mine,a plan is in place for my garden.
So here we go,I have an area of decking which I detest,I hate it and it has to go:angry:
So contacted local gardener for a price to remove it and relawn it with turf.
Price seems a little bit high(No very high)for the work involved,we are only talking a small area in my garden. So now for the advice, could I relawn it myself with seed,or would I have to have turf???
This is out of my comfort zone, but could I have a go:dry:
I know that if I asked Twonk,he would advise me,but I want my lawn to be the Green grass of home, not the boggy marshlands full of Bovine Excrement:blink:

So please all you green fingered wiki''s,advice needed:) :)

Turf would give you an instant lawn, while grass seed would take a while to grow; turf is quite expensive however while grass seed is much more affordable.

If it were me, I would seed the area - nothing like seeing seeds planted by your own fair hand grow :)

There are lots of different choices for grass seed, i use one that has "food" mixed in with the seed for patching my "lawn".

Hi depends how big the area is and how patient you are!!!

I have done both in the past, both will involve preparing the area flat etc. Turf is more expensive, grass seed cheaper.

I only seeded a small area but it looks great!

Have fun xx

Thanks Ruby and Perin:)

It is only a small area, and yes although I can be Oh so impatient,I do like to nurture plants and the pleasure when they grow;)so possibly the route will be seed:)

I would hate to fail at something that he would be able to do....

Will keep you updated how this next visit, out of my comfort zone, fares.Hopefully all good;)

Once again Thanx

Hi Afron,

If you don''t have animals that you need to keep off it I would go with seed, you will be surprised how quickly it grows and I think you will get abetter lawn, as I have had turf before full of weeds.

Actually the most important thing is to have the area properly prepared - nicely level. As above turf is quick, but will need watering in if it''s sunny and likely to dry out before it has rooted into your soil. Turf will be poorer quality grass with probs lots of weeds, unless you buy the expensive stuff. Seed is cheap, it''s the right time of year to sow. Will take longer to establish itself into a lawn you can actually use. You will also be feeding the local bird life, though that might reduce the cost of feeding the cats lol.
