FREE !!!!! Money towards your electricity bill!!

Speaking to my provider today about my usage which concerned me I mentioned I was a single parent and he told me of a government backed scheme THE WARM HOME DISCOUNT SCHEME where by if you earn less than £16,190.00 pa including income from tax credits you get £140 towards your energy bill payable next March.

Naturally I applied and hopefully come next March will see a credit on my bill..thought this info may be useful to some !!

All the big 6 providers run this scheme but he also suggested asking smaller providers if they do too.

Mind you, I have been trying for almost a year to get somewhere with their free boiler scheme. Someone came round and confirmed that I was eligible, and since then I have been round the houses for a few months before giving up....

Yes I think my boiler is getting near the end but unfortunately scheme doesn''t cover oil boilers and as we have no gas in our village I have no other option!!

Also I find Martin Lewis Moneysavingexpert website/newsletter brilliant and the latest tells how you may get help towards not only the usual cavity/loft insulation but also solid wall insulation which for myself would be of interest due to the age of the property I live in.

I applied for the warm home discount scheme 2 years ago - waited and waited to hear from them. Nothing happened so rang them - they said they didn''t get my forms even though they were sent recorded delivery and it was too late to resend the application so I got nothing!
I applied again the next year - didn''t get anything again - they discovered another problem with the application!
I have heard this happens regularly so I would ring to check they''ve got your application and everything is ok.

How did you apply? I have heard of the scheme but understood that you only qualified if you had a child under 5 or a got a disabled child element in your child tax credits and that if you did qualify you were automatically contacted?

I was speaking to them in general about costs and tariffs and he mentioned it then went through it on the phone; having a disabled child or a child under 5 is just one of the criteria that you may qualify with the other is income including tax credits.

Another thing to check possibly is your tariff as I found out yesterday I was on an economy 7 tariff and do not have storage heaters nor do I use the majority of my electric at night.

Apparently this came about when I swapped providers as the meter that is installed is an economy 7 one from 1998 when storage heaters were in the property.


When you swap the previous provider tells new provider what meter type it is but not that you are on a single rate as I was as I had previously swapped when storage heaters were taken out.

This means for the last 18 months I have been paying the equivalent of 21.88p per unit + 19.56p per day standing charge when I could / should have been paying 13.98p per unit and 7.23p per day standing charge!
